Hi Dad,
I wanted a key ring holder, so I browsed around online for some ideas, and found a great one!
Paul and I made this in a few hours with wood we had on-hand. I only had to go buy some fat nails. I have no idea what the woods are. They came out of an old box of exotic hardwood scraps that Paul bought years ago.
We used the drill press to pre-drill the nail holes so the wood wouldn't split, of course. But in the picture below, you'll see some blue lines-- those are rubber bands that we used to hold a scrap piece of wood to the back of the key ring holder. This tipped the holder just slightly, so that the nails would go in at an angle, and the key rings won't fall off.
Here it is before we put in the nails and "framed" it. Each little piece of "stripe" is glued onto the solid plywood backing. The whole thing is about an inch thick. I added a little detailing to each "stripe" by leaving an impression with a nail set above and below the nails themselves.
These are similar to the nail sets I used to hammer in the little indentations.
